For Hurdzan/Fry this design approach has become not only their hallmark, but also their lifestyle. They have tried to make their offices as environmentally friendly as possible with energy saving lights and appliances, but also using awnings and landscaping to reduce summer solar radiation while gaining some passive heat gain in the winter. The landscaping and grounds are non-irrigated to save water and they have installed an artificial turf green and surround as a no-input amenity. Recycled materials were used in construction and maintenance where practical.
When notified of the award Dr. Michael Hurdzan said, “Environmental stewardship is something we live and not just talk about. It is gratifying to earn Golf, Inc.’s recognition for it validates our efforts and perhaps we can serve as an inspiration for others to do the same, or more.” Dr. Hurdzan went on to say; “In our own day-to-day activities we have adopted recycling procedures that includes reusing and recycling all sorts of potentially wasted materials to include packaging and shipping materials. We even provide ‘eco-friendly’ golf shirts made from corn grown in the U.S. for participants in our annual golf outing that raises money for charity, specifically to purchase powered wheelchairs for persons in need.”
Dana Fry, Hurdzan’s business partner explains “Our concern for being better friends to the environment as a company is reflected in all our course designs. Our goal is to produce a market competitive golf course that requires fewer inputs of water, fertilizer, pesticides and energy resources than our competitors. We are uniquely qualified in our education, experience and philosophy to deliver the most environmentally correct course a site can provide.”
A special plaque will be presented to Hurdzan/Fry at a reception during the Fall Golf Inc. Conference September 14-16 at the La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, California.
