David Whelchel, senior designer for Hurdzan/Fry Golf Course Design, and member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, will assume a new role as Hurdzan/Fry's international project coordinator, effective mid-September 2007.
"David has been with us for almost 18 years," said Michael Hurdzan, Ph.D., "and has become our 'go to guy' on some of our most challenging projects, particularly those overseas. Now he will lessen his time as a designer and assist us in coordinating and producing quality projects for international clients. Currently David is lead designer on projects in Italy, Korea, and South Africa, so he knows how to get results in different cultural situations."
Whelchel was formerly the golf coach at the University of Arkansas before becoming involved in golf course construction in Florida in 1983, and thereafter he joined Ron Garl Design as a designer, before being recruited by Hurdzan in 1990. He has been lead designer on projects throughout North America as well as Hurdzan/Fry projects in Australia. His wife Jean is a senior finance manager at Wal-Mart corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Ark.
"I have enjoyed my time at Hurdzan/Fry and it is difficult to leave central Ohio which has become my second home," said Whelchel, "but I want to slow down a little bit and be back in my home state of Arkansas and enjoy my family and golf there. I am happy to continue with Hurdzan/Fry in this new capacity, and hope to further develop our international presence and reputation."
The Whelchels will reside in Bella Vista, Ark.
