Harrell’s bolsters its lineup of turf personnel

Dr. Jeff Atkinson named director of agronomy; Matt Gregg and Kurt von Hoffen appointed to key sales positions.

Employee-owned Harrell’s, LLC has announced the appointment of three top leaders to support their turf customers.

Dr. Jeffrey Atkinson, Director of Agronomy
Atkinson comes to Harrell’s with 13 years in the turfgrass industry. He has most recently worked as a turf and landscape portfolio leader with SePRO. Atkinson will provide technical support to the Northern region and the West Coast along with Harrell’s employee-owner and long-trusted director of agronomy Dr. Raymond Snyder. Atkinson earned a Ph.D in plant and environmental sciences, a masters of science in plant physiology and bachelor of science in turfgrass management from Clemson University.
“I’ve known Jeff for eleven years and have been impressed with his work at SePRO,” said Jack Harrell III, senior vice president of turf sales, South. “His character and personality fit well with our culture and we’re looking forward to the knowledge and skills he brings to the Harrell’s Agronomy Team.”

Atkinson’s area of expertise in turfgrass weed science and weed biology complements Snyder’s plant health focus. As employee-owners, together they will provide support of the Harrell’s Balanced Approach Annual Programs, customer education seminars, regional product trials, product research and development, and the TurPh.Dudes podcast.

Matt Gregg, Sales Director, Coastal Plains
Gregg rejoins the Harrell’s team as the Sales Director for the Coastal Plains region. Gregg holds both an undergraduate degree in horticulture and a masters degree in plant and environmental sciences from Clemson University, and he has 15 years of industry experience. After finishing his M.S. degree in 2003, Gregg joined the Harrell’s team where he served as a top turf sales representative in central Florida. He then pioneered and expanded the Harrell’s footprint supporting golf course superintendents in the developing Virginia market for four years.  Most recently, Gregg comes from Hocking International Laboratories where his focus was investigating new product opportunities, product development and providing technical sales support for the Harrell’s MAX product lines. Gregg will lead the Coastal Plains team of ten turf sales representatives and employee-owners in the Panhandle of Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and southern Indiana.

“Matt has become an admired leader for our team over the years,” Jack Harrell III said. “His extensive agronomic knowledge, coupled with his people and communication skills will be a great asset to our Coastal Plains region. We are thrilled to have Matt return and join our rank of over 300 employee-owners at Harrell’s.”

Kurt von Hofen, Sales Director, Southeast
Von Hofen has been promoted to sales director of the Southeast Turf Sales team. Upon joining the Harrell’s team five years ago as a territory manager in central and eastern North Carolina, von Hofen was tasked with developing customer support to that region. Von Hofen has 21 years in the industry, including 10 years as a superintendent with Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta, Fla., and El Cameleón Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, México, and has contributed to course management for 13 professional golf tournaments. He holds a turfgrass management degree from the Agricultural Technical Institute at The Ohio State University and is a founding member of the von Hofen Turfgrass Scholarship at The Ohio State University. Von Hofen will lead a team of 12 devoted turf sales representatives and employee-owners in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

“Kurt represents all the core values of the company,” Jack Harrell III said. “He is a great communicator and leader providing a level of professionalism that Harrell’s is known for in the Southeast region.”
