Grigg Brothers Foliar Fertilizers continues to bolster its agronomic team with the addition of longtime Virginia superintendent Charlie Fultz to its technical staff.
Fultz has been in the course-maintenance business since 1992, having worked as a course superintendent in Virginia for the past 13 years. Most recently he was posted at Shenvalee Golf Resort in New Market, Va., a 27-hole layout about an hour northwest of Charlottesville. Before that he was superintendent at the Country Club of Culpepper.
Fultz can be reached directly by calling 540-333-7920 or 208-227-7037. He can be reached via email at charlie@griggbros.com
Fultz, who holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Longwood University in Farmville, Va., will join Grigg Brothers in early March as the company’s technical and distributor representative for the Southeast. His first priority will be training the sales staff at a new Virginia distributor of the Grigg line, while also offering support to distributors and customers throughout the three-state region.
“When I graduated from college there was a hiring freeze on teachers in Virginia,” Fultz recalls with a chuckle. “Those of us with education degrees weren’t going anywhere in that field. Fortunately, I spent my summers on golf courses while in high school and college, and someone was willing to take a chance on me.”
Grigg Brothers Vice President Gary Grigg says he's glad Fultz’s first post-college boss chose to roll the dice.
“The skills Charlie gained in a formal college setting, plus the agronomic experience he has accumulated over the past 13 years as a superintendent, make him a perfect fit for this position," he says. "He has the teaching skills and product knowledge to thoroughly instruct our distributors and customers about the advantages of our products and how to use them.”
Fultz traces his history with Grigg Brothers back to 1999, when his was the first Virginia course to use the company’s foliar products. He was also the first Virginia superintendent to use Grigg products exclusively on his greens and later helped the Idaho-based firm find its initial distributor in the Mid-Atlantic state.
“I tried some of their granular products as a test course before they officially started marketing them a couple of years ago, and their soluble products long before that,” Fultz says. “Grigg Brothers’ products transformed my average greens into incredible putting surfaces at both facilities where I was head superintendent.
“I have gotten to know Mark [Grigg] and Gary very well over the years and been a huge supporter of their products. We’ve become good friends. They have been looking to expand into the Mid-Atlantic and find another rep. We had spoken frequently about my joining the company the past few years and I finally succumbed to the pressure.”
Married with three children, Fultz was a speaker at the 2005 Golf Industry Show’s Innovative Superintendent session. He’s also the 2006 winner of the Leo Feser Award, presented annually to a Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) member superintendent in recognition of the best superintendent-written article in Golf Course Management, the GCSAA’s monthly magazine
