The Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau announced that Great Bear Golf and Country Club, named Pennsylvania's No. 4 course in Golfweek's11th annual, state-by-state ranking of "America's Best Courses", will host a regional qualifier on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006 for the ESPN National Golf Challenge.
Located in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, Great Bear hosted the event each of the past two seasons and this year welcomes 138 participants in the two-person better ball tournament. One net and one gross winning team from Great Bear will advance to the finals in Las Vegas in November and will vie for the distinction of being named ESPN's "America's Best 2 Some."
"Great Bear Golf Club is a championship layout by a legendary designer and therefore a very good competitive venue, as evidenced by quality brands like ESPN and the Nationwide Tour selecting us to host their events," says Great Bear Golf Club head golf professional Chris Brosius.
Great Bear members Justin Hilgert and Kevin Dixon are trying to qualify for the Gross Division, while Rich and Dee Cook try to qualify in the Net Division.
National finalists will participate in the filming and broadcast of a one-hour special broadcast to air on ESPN2. The final winners will be on the 2007 ESPY Awards on ESPN.
Great Bear is no stranger to hosting quality competitions. It hosted qualifying for the Nationwide Tour's Northeast Pennsylvania Classic on Sunday, Aug. 13. Former PGA Tour member Emlyn Aubrey and Dave Narveson both shot 66 to take medalist honors, qualify for the Nationwide event and set the new Great Bear course record.
Like Golfweek, Golf Digest also ranked Great Bear among the top courses in Pennsylvania. It has also been rated by Golf for Women magazine as one of the top 100 women-friendly courses in the country.
Great Bear is one of 35 golf and resort properties in the lush mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania known collectively as "Pocono Mountains: Discover Golf's Great Destination Secret."
