Golf Teacher Jim Flick

Originally from Bedford, Ind., Flick began teaching in his home state and later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1972 he started working in golf schools, and over the past 34 years has taught more than 1,000 three-day programs.

Flick has been recognized in numerous ways for his teaching by his peers, players, and the golf media. Flick was honored by the PGA of America as the Teacher of the Year in 1988. Golf World Magazine named Flick on their list of Top 10 Teachers of the 20th Century in 1999. In 2002, Flick was inducted into the World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame as its ninth member. He has worked with over 200 touring professionals.

When asked what his greatest achievement as a teacher was, surprisingly there wasn’t much hesitation in his answer, considering how many players he has coached over his 52 years of teaching and how accomplished those players have become. Flick has worked with Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman since 1989, when Lehman didn’t have a PGA Tour card. In 1996, Lehman captured the British Open en route to leading the money list and winning the Tour’s Player of the Year Award. Those seven years of work that the two put together sits on the top of his list.

Flick does not limit his students to adults. He takes great pride in his ability to teach juniors. Recently, one of Flicks students, Philip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz., was triumphant in the final at the U.S. Junior Amateur at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Francis will attend UCLA in the fall on a golf scholarship.

Flick believes that the true art of teaching golf is in helping each student to better understand their challenges and to become their own coach thereby enabling the self-confidence and self-reliance to continue learning and improving long after the formal lessons.

With a smile, Flick says he is now "fully re-located" to Southern California where he has taken on the role of Golf Ambassador for TaylorMade – adidas Golf. Flick’s office is located in the famed "Kingdom" at TaylorMade’s global headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif. His new role at TaylorMade will keep him busy, but that doesn’t mean he has closed up shop – far from it. Flick can still be booked for corporate outings, multiple day golf schools and individual lessons on a space available basis.
