The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) announced that Michael Mongon, a certified grounds manager (CGM) from the Fairview Country Club in Greenwich, Conn. has taken the helm as PGMS president.

Mongon, who serves as Fairview’s golf course superintendent and property manager, becomes the 85th grounds management professional to hold the office. Monica Higgins, CGM of Shadow Glen the Golf Club in Olathe, Kan., was also elected as treasurer during the Society's annual business meeting held on Friday, November 3 in conjunction with the 2006 School of Grounds Management and Green Industry Exposition in Columbus, Ohio (Nov. 1-4).
During an awards banquet held at the School, PGMS also recognized Stone Mountain Golf Club of Stone Mountain, Ga. with a Grand Award as the country’s top grounds management program in the Golf Course category in the Society's 2006 Green Star Awards competition.
The Green Star Awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence, complimenting other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction. This year's program acknowledged the nation's top manicured grounds in settings ranging from parks to apartment complexes to cemeteries. Overall, PGMS presented 14 Grand Awards, its highest honor, as well as 12 Honor Awards in a dozen categories of competition.
