Construction has begun on a long-awaited 18-hole public golf course at Hugh White State Park on Grenada Lake. The groundbreaking ceremony was held May 25 at the golf course site.
Eight years in the making, the 18-hole public golf course will be a new stop on the Magnolia Golf Trail and is anticipated to be open in the fall of 2005.
The vision of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (DWFP), the City of Grenada and Grenada County was to complement the existing activities and facilities with a new golf experience that would cater to existing users of the park, as well as invite additional visitors to enjoy the natural and recreational experiences that Grenada' and Grenada Lake have to offer, They also wanted to develop a challenging addition to the Magnolia Golf Trail with results from the experiences of the courses at McComb and Sardis.
DWFP retained the design and development team of Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon Inc., Global Golf Design and Wadsworth Golf Construction Company to create a plan for the championship golf course complex.
The course will have a practice and learning center that is "grown-in." The course includes multiple teeing areas, Bermuda fairways and greens, concrete cart paths and a comprehensive irrigation system to provide for playability and maintenance. The 3,200-square-foot clubhouse will serve as an entry point for the golf public. It includes pro shop, small grill kitchen, restrooms and dining area. The building and site design interacts with the existing environment to provide for a naturalistic "state park feel" for the entire complex.
DWFP has entered into an inter-local agreement with the City of Grenada to run the $4.9-million course.
