A gang of thugs turned a world famous golf course into a stock car track after stealing golf buggies and going on a racing rampage, damaging turf.
The thugs started racing six 15mph golf carts over putting greens in the grounds of a posh hotel after sneaking in at night.
They managed to start up the electric buggies stored in the grounds of the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, Fife, then used them to race round and crash into each other on the Duke's Course.
Groundskeepers were fuming after finding thugs had used the buggies as stock cars and damaged the turf.
The neds went wild with carts just yards from where top players like Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh will tee off at next year's British Open.
The gang managed to sneak into the golf course during the night last Wednesday and went on the rampage after discovering the pool of players' golf carts.
Golf course staff found the buggies littered around the course the next morning.
Police are hunting for the culprits, and are considering the possibility that the vandals may have been students from the town's renowned university.
A Fife police insider said: "This incident is still under investigation, but six golf buggies were taken and driven around for some time at the Duke's Course.
"It looks like they were just racing them around, maybe crashing into each other for fun.
"The incident would have happened some time during the night last Wednesday and the damage was discovered and reported to us the next morning by the golf course's staff."
Duke's Course managers were last night unwilling to comment on the incident, speaking just to confirm that they had called police officers in to deal with the the matter.
