News Flash: New Industry Rule Requires All Golf/Turf Editors to Be Named “Jones”
Just kidding, but there does seem to be a trend here as young Seth Jones officially takes the editorial reins at Golfdom.
(By the way, I sooooo enjoyed all the clever messages I received from those of you who saw the e-mail announcing Seth’s hiring at my old magazine! My favorite was a call out of the blue from an old friend who’d seen the e-mail on his BlackBerry and hadn’t bothered to read anything but the headline (“Jones named editor-in-chief of Golfdom”). His exact words were, “Jonesy…have you finally completely lost your mind?!? Are you back on the booze again?” After he stopped yammering, I told him that I am both semi-sane and still stone-cold sober after more than a year.)
In case you’ve been working and having a life and not worrying much about who’s editor of what these days, here’s an update on the recent game of musical chairs being played at the other industry magazines:
- Ed Hiscock was downsized by the GCSAA for budget reasons after more than a decade running GCM.
- Scott Hollister moved up the ladder to replace Ed.
- Larry Aylward quit Golfdom, but will stay in Cleveland and oversee Moose River Media’s Superintendent publication long distance.
- Seth jumps into Larry’s job, but will stay in Lawrence and run Golfdom remotely. Apparently, Cleveland had hit its quota for golf editors and Seth wasn’t granted a visa or something.
Feel free to draw your own conclusions from this Chinese Fire Drill at the other magazines. All I can say is that, while all of that crap has been going on, we’ve been happily focused on providing you and our rapidly growing group of advertisers with a fabulous magazine, a great e-newsletter filled with original content (instead of just junk stolen from Google News searches) and a website chock full of original articles, videos and other cool stuff. Oh, did I mention that we’ll be relaunching our website in January with a new look, better navigation and more bells and whistles than a Mardi Gras parade? Did I forget to tell you we’re adding editorial staff in 2011 while others are reducing headcount and cutting budgets?
And, to answer your question, Seth is no relation to me as far as I know…but I wish him the best of luck with my old book anyway.
