GIS attendants help construct homes

About 200 people volunteered to help the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity work on eight homes throught the city.

Golf Industry Show partners sent about 200 volunteers to help New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity work on eight homes being built in two of the most devastated areas of the Crescent City Feb. 3-4. Show partners and volunteers donated more than $10,000 to help in the restoration.

GIS volunteers were golf course superintendents and owners, club managers, golf course builders and architects. The volunteers included people from all segments of the industry including a student group from Texas A&M University, a chapter group from the Midwest Association of Golf Course Superintendents (Geneva, Ill.) and several groups of GIS exhibitors.

The volunteers worked for two days on two work sites in the Jefferson Parish and Central City section of New Orleans doing tasks such as laying sod, installing flashing, leveling dirt, building fences, finishing roofs and constructing stairs, walls and floors for local families.

The donation of more than $10,000 to New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity was raised from its registrants and an unclaimed grand prize from the trade show floor's promotion Road to RICHE$. In addition, the Toro Co. also provided a contribution to help provide materials for the volunteers.
