Eleven of 18 holes at the Estevan Woodlawn Golf Course are under water following the latest round of flooding from the Souris River, says course superintendent Bob Currie.
It could be some time before the course reopens. Currie expects that the front nine might be ready a couple of weeks after the water recedes, but the back nine would need additional time, since it's in a lower-lying area.
“I don't think too many people around here are used to seeing flooding anymore, so we don't have much historical data to go on as far as how long it will take for the river to drop, and how long it will take to get rid of the excess water after that,” said Currie.
Sandbags were placed by volunteers around the clubhouse and the pro shop building, so it has remained dry. All of the equipment has been moved from the storage area to higher ground to ensure their preservation.
Prior to the latest round of flooding, the course was in good shape, Currie said. The April flood did cause some problems because grass was submerged for too long. But the course had been open for about a week-and-a-half, and many people were golfing.
