The BMW Championship will leave Chicago in 2014, PGA Tour sources told the Tribune.
The FedEx Cup event will be played near Denver at Cherry Hills Country Club, site of Arnold Palmer’s spectacular victory in the 1960 U.S. Open. Club member John Elway will make the official announcement Tuesday morning.
But the 2013 BMW Championship remains up for grabs, and several Chicago-area courses are in the running.
Cog Hill will host the event this September in something of a “tryout.”
Players panned the condition of Cog Hill’s greens and run-up areas last year, and the club responded by hiring a new superintendent, Scott Pavalko, who previously worked at Muirfield Village Golf Club, near Columbus, Ohio.
The Glen Club, which hosted a Nationwide Tour event from 2003-08, also will vie for the 2013 BMW.
Medinah and Kemper Lakes, both of which have hosted the PGA Championship, could be in the mix.
Western Golf Association officials also will consider Conway Farms, which successfully hosted the Western Am in 2009.
If Butler National were to add a female member, sources said it could jump to the top of the WGA’s wish list. Butler National hosted the Western Open from 1974-90, has an ideal location west of Chicago and the course is easily tour-caliber.
