Borman receives Distinguished Service Award

Past Carolinas GCSA executive director recognized for his focus on the people inside the association.

One of Chuck Borman’s less talked about achievements during his time at the Carolinas GCSA was his capacity to retain staff. But that achievement was highlighted when he received the association’s Distinguished Service Award this week. Borman invited everyone who worked under him to the stage. Remarkably in this age’s volatile job market, all six of those called up are still working with the association.

Borman said his award belonged as much to those people because of the support they had provided over the years. He also gave thanks to the association membership for their consistent and wholehearted backing from the day he arrived on the job.

During his tenure as executive director, the Carolinas GCSA:
•    Grew membership from 1,200 to 1,800
•    Grew the annual operating budget from $400,000 to $1.1-million
•    Grew Conference and Show gross revenues from $230,000 to around $600,000
•    Became the first regional superintendents association in the country to own its own headquarters
•    Employed its first professional government relations experts in each state
•    Became an integral part of South Carolina Golf Week celebrations and promotion
•    Led the campaign to have North Carolina Golf Day proclaimed by the governor, twice
•    Steered the first North Carolina Golf Economic Impact Study

“Chuck Borman treated every member of this association the same whether they were a superintendent or a vendor, whether they had a $100,000 budget or a $1 million budget,” outgoing Carolinas GCSA president, John Davis, said. “He made many, many nuts and bolts achievements during his time but his primary focus was always on the people who make up the Carolinas GCSA.”
