GCSANC hosts workshop

Callippe Preserve Golf Course in Pleasanton, Calif. is the site for 2005 Golf Course Superintendents field workshop.

Pleasanton, CA -- The Northern California Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association announced its 2005 Field Workshop themed "Design and Management in the Age of Permits," has been set for April 28 at the Callippe Preserve Golf Course in Pleasanton, Calif.

Sponsored by the GCSANC in conjunction with the University of California Cooperative Extension, the field day workshop will give golf course superintendents and associated professionals an inside look at a golf course design project. More than 100 golf course superintendents and GCSANC affiliate members are expected to participate in the educational experience at Callippe Preserve, a public course due to open later this year.

Designed by Brian Costello, ASGCA, owner of JMP Golf Design Group, the Callippe Preserve Golf Course is located in Pleasanton, Calif. CourseCo, a Northern California based golf management company will manage and maintain the City of Pleasanton owned course.

The educational workshop begins with a tour of the site, where participants will view course attributes including design, irrigation, greens and plant management. Topics to be covered in seminar presentations include: the vision, the challenges, design considerations and solutions, management and maintenance. Speakers for the day include Tom Fraser with Wetland Research Associates; Jim Wolfe, director of parks and community services (City of Pleasanton); Rob Wilson, director of public works (City of Pleasanton); Edward Ballman with Balance Hydrologies; Brian Costello, ASGCA, with JMP Golf Design; Dave Davies, CGCS, with Callippe Preserve GC; and Ray Davies, CGCS, director of construction and maintenance with CourseCo.

Committee members for the field workshop include Dr. Ali Harivandi with the U.C. Cooperative Extension; GCSANC vice president Gill Stiles; GCSANC “superintendent of the year” Terry Grasso; and host golf course superintendent Dave Davies.
