Anna Farre and Kristoffer Palmlund have been awarded the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA)/Scotts Company Scholarships.

Administered by The Environmental Institute for Golf, The Scotts Company Scholars Program offers education and employment opportunities to students interested in careers in the green industry. The program offers those students the opportunity to learn more about the green industry within the learning environment of a summer internship, while also competing for a collegiate scholarship. One of the primary goals of the program is to seek out promising students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This includes women, minorities and individuals with disabilities.

Five finalists were selected from all applications and received a $500 award as a means to supplement their summer internship income. The five finalists were responsible for securing their own internships. Upon completion of the internship, the five finalists then competed for two $2,500 scholarships. The scholarships were awarded to Farre and Palmlund based on the students’ original application and an evaluation by their internship supervisor as well as a self-evaluation of their internship performance.

A Barcelona, Spain native, Farre is in the two-year Golf Turfgrass Management program at Michigan State University. She has already earned both a bachelors and a masters degree in Agricultural Engineering and her summer internship was at Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville, Mich., working for GCSAA Class A Golf Course Superintendent, Mike Edgerton. Palmlund, who hails from Gothenburg, Sweden, is studying Golf Course Turfgrass Management at Penn State University. He completed an internship for Torrekulla Golf Course in Gothenburg under GCSAA certified golf course superintendent Martin Sternberg. Both Farre and Palmlund will also receive an all-expense paid trip to the GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show in Anaheim, Calif., this February.
