The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America has announced a multi-faceted relief program aimed at assisting both the public and its members who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.
“The golf industry as a whole and GCSAA in particular has a history of benevolence,” says GCSAA president Tim O’Neill, CGCS. “Our members know all too well the force and destruction that Mother Nature can deliver. We feel it is our responsibility to help those affected and the contributions will be significant.”
Just as it did for the Southeast Asia Tsunami earlier this year, GCSAA is participating with its golf brethren in the U.S. Golf Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. A goal of $5 million has been established.
The association also has its Emergency Relief Fund for member distribution. These monies are set aside annually for GCSAA members who suffer personal loss. To apply for these funds, members should contact Scott Woodhead, GCSAA senior manager of governance, at 800-472-7878, ext. 4418.
Supplementing the funds available for members is the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Program. Administered through GCSAA’s philanthropic organization – the Environmental Institute for Golf – these monies will be distributed to members for personal loss. O’Neill indicated that donations would be sought from members, affiliated chapters and the golf industry.
Lastly, working with its partners who conduct the Golf Industry Show, GCSAA will organize a variety of fund-raising activities around the show, Feb. 9 through 11 in Houston. The show was originally scheduled for New Orleans, but officials announced the move to Houston Sept. 8 after all conventions through March in the affected area were canceled. According to O’Neill, no decisions have been made as to where the funds generated at the Golf Industry Show will be directed. He indicated officials would determine disbursements after evaluating needs. More details on this program will be announced at a later date.
