Mesquite Golf Club wins award

Course maintenance had been neglected for several years by the previous course management and extensive repair work was needed throughout the course.

Mesquite announced recognition by the Texas Turfgrass Association for Golf Course Renovation Project of the Year.

This is the city’s sixth TTA award since 2001.

The Mesquite Golf Club on Interstate 30 was chosen as the recipient of the award from candidates across the state. To qualify for the award, renovations could include modifications to tee boxes, greens, fairways, irrigations and drainage projects. A plaque was presented to the manager of parks services and golf course superintendent Travis Sales during the TTA Conference at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

“On May 1, the city assumed management of the golf course and began a very aggressive turf maintenance program to improve course conditions,” Sales said.

Course maintenance had been neglected for several years by the previous course management and extensive repair work was needed throughout the course. Soil samples were collected to determine ground fertility and nutrient levels, and an overall assessment of course conditions and irrigation systems were conducted.

One full-time maintenance technician and five part-time employees were hired to monitor course upkeep, which includes mowing the entire course on a daily basis.
