The Reno City Council this week accepted a petition signed by 83 surrounding property owners asking the city to create a special property tax district to raise $1.2 million to buy 100 acres of the golf course.
With that petition and an accompanying resolution approved by the council, property owners will be formally notified of a public hearing in a few months to deal with any protests.
The property owners around the golf course who signed the petition represent 68.7 percent of the appraised value of the property in the district. That's 2 percent more than the percentage required by state law.
The resolution creating the district also extends an option with the RJB Trust to purchase the property through March 1. The total purchase price is $2.4 million.
