Students from Horry-Georgetown Technical College No. 2 team won this year’s student turfbowl from a record field of 12 teams.
Team members included Kyle Hamilton, Kevin Nason, Jay Richardson and Bradley Stokes.
According to team advisor Ashley Grant WIlkinson, this was the fifth time HGTC has won the Turf Bowl.
"It's HGTC's best chance to compete against schools like Clemson and NC State," he says. "The last time we'd won was 2009, so our guys were getting antsy about securing another win."
Six different institutions each entered two teams in the annual event that tests students on their knowledge on a broad range of turfgrass issues. Runners-up this year were students from Abraham-Baldwin Agricultural College No. 1 team in their first year in the competition.
North Carolina State University No. 2 and Sandhills Community College No. 2 tied for third. Horry-Georgetown received a trophy and $700 for the win.
Second prize was worth $500 and the tie for third meant the $300 prize was split.
