Steve Agazzi blew away the field to win his second Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association golf championship at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Course on Monday. Agazzi, from the Turtle Point course at Kiawah Island Resort, fired a three-under par round of 69 to beat his nearest competition by seven strokes. His round included five birdies and an eagle, comfortably outweighing the negative impact of two bogies and one double-bogey.
Two hometown superintendents finished second with rounds of 76 – Kevin Thompkins from True Blue Plantation and Clay Du Bose, CGCS from Tradition Golf Club. Agazzi also won the championship in 2010.
Cordie Morgan, from Milliken and Company, won the affiliate championship with a round of 75. Dave Thinnes, of PNC Equipment Finance, shot a round of 71 to win the senior championship for a second time. He also won in 2010.
The championship, presented in partnership with Smith Turf and Irrigation and The Toro Company, attracted a field of 323 golfers across three of Barefoot Resort’s four courses. It was the largest field for the championship in several years.
Players also competed for a total of 12 cash prizes of $350 in nearest to the pin and longest drive contests presented in partnership with TCF Equipment Finance and PNC Equipment Finance.
