For the past 30 years, golf course superintendent Mike McCulloch takes a few putts every morning.
After installing new Sunday grass on the greens at Cross Creek Country Club, he’s enjoying his ritual a little more.
“The ball rolls truer across the green and holds the line,” he said.
“There’s no bouncing or wandering,” added John Jurkovac, Cross Creek club pro.
What they also like is that it may save Cross Creek money because they don’t think it will have to be maintained or replaced as much.
Word is getting out on Sunday grass, which has been around for awhile but didn’t have a name until a couple of years ago. Besides Cross Creek, the light-green Bermuda is being used at Naples’ Riviera Golf Club, Majestic Golf Club, Copperhead Golf Club in Lehigh and a course in Birmingham, Ala., as well as Boerne, Texas, which is owned by country singer George Strait.
Bethel Farms in Arcadia has supplied most of the Sunday grass to those courses. Sam Greenwood, national production manager for golf and sports turf for Bethel Farms, said the initial reviews are strong after getting the grass certified by fumigating an area and putting high fences around it to keep weeds and bugs away.
