The October issue of Golf Course Industry highlights our exclusive research on golf course dogs. We received such great feedback from readers participating in the survey that we couldn't fit it all into one print issue. So you'll need to access the exclusive content in the app-version of the Octobrer issue.
Here's a sample of what you're missing:
"On an early morning tour of the course during flood level storms a wicked storm front quickly moved in so I retreated to the shop for a rain suit expecting Gus (Guztav Lazslo,a male pure-bred Vizsla) to follow. When he didn't show up at the shop I headed into the storm to look for him. I went back to the location where I last saw him chasing some ducks. As I called him out I heard a yelp that I had never heard before.
"As I narrowed my search I realized Gus was trapped between the steel I-beams of a bridge that crossed a creek and the water level was steel high. The only air space was between the steel, the deck and the water. I could hear him but not see him.
"Panic. What to do?
"His cries ripped at my heart. Alone and in a driving thunderstorm I had to try and save him. I took off the rain suit and climbed in the raging water on the down stream of the bridge hoping I could at least catch him if he drowned. The water was cloudy so I wasn't sure I would see him. I tried a test run by going under the first beam and catch some air in the gap. Epic fail. Mouthful of nasty water. The dog is still crying.
"Second try to beam dive. I managed to get a spot and catch a breath. I reached around and felt his leg swimming but lost footing as was washed out from under the bridge. I now know about his location. One last try. I walked to the bridge center and took a breath and pulled myself to the middle. Still underwater I got hold of his leg and pulled down hard to clear him from the beams. Without letting go I let the current push us both out from under the bridge.
"Exhausted I walked to the bank and hoisted the dog to the shore. As I stood in the water catching my wind Gus decided to look for the duck that started the whole sequence of events."
