Charlie G. Wilson passes

With the distincition of being the USGA's first visiting agronomist and pioneer of the USGA's turfgrass advisory service, Wilson had a profound influence on the industry during his nearly three decades as an agronomist. A short illness claimed the 93 year old on Sept. 23.


 

Charlie Wilson, the USGA's first consulting agronomist, passed away Sept. 23 after a short illness. He was 93.

Wilson's career as an agronomist spans nearly 30 years, and in that time he had witnessed and influenced the transition of superintendents from "farmers" to highly trained professionals. Likewise, Wilson assisted in the creation of of turfgrass research that focused on a providing adiverse array of solutions for turfgrass managers.

In addition, Wilson spearheaded the formation of the O.J. Noer Foundation, a turfgrass research foundation named to honor the man who taught him so much.

In November 2012, GCI columnist Monroe Miller devoted a column in tribute to Wilson's career and impact on the turf industry.

At that time, Monroe's interview with Wilson was recorded for posterity by the Turfgrass Information Center, a cooperative project of the USGA and Michigan State University.
