Desert Mountain Club names director of golf

Director of golf at Medinah Country Club joins Scottsdale private club.

Desert Mountain, the prestigious, private golf and recreational community in Scottsdale, has named Michael Scully as its new director of golf. He will assume responsibilities in October.

Currently, Scully is the director of golf at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill., this year’s site of the 39th annual Ryder Cup Matches scheduled in September. He will join the Desert Mountain golf team in time to oversee the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Champions Tour being held at Desert Mountain Oct. 31-Nov. 4 on the Cochise course.

“We are thrilled to have a golf professional of Michael’s caliber join our already outstanding golf and agronomy teams,” said Desert Mountain COO and General Manager Bob Jones. “Under his leadership, Desert Mountain will achieve a new level of excellence in both member service and overall golfing experience.”

Scully, who launched his career in sports in the late 1980s as a center for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Redskins, has spent more than 20 years in the golf industry. He got his start at The Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla. in 1995 as an assistant golf professional working his way up to head golf professional.

In 2003, he joined Medinah Country Club. During his tenure, Medinah hosted the 88th annual PGA Championship in 2006. Among other highlights of his career at Medinah was his creation of the “Medinah Standards Program” for the development and mentoring of staff, the facilitation of the Medinah Instructional Program for members and juniors, and recognition in the Illinois golf industry as Illinois PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 2008.

“I’ve been playing golf and have been around the golf business since I was very young,” said Scully, “My dad, John, has a 4 handicap and he just won a seniors championship in South Carolina. My brother has a single digit handicap. I know the importance of a player’s experience on the course and the high level of customer service that members should expect from a club with the elegance, ambience and reputation of Desert Mountain.”

Scully called Desert Mountain’s six Nicklaus Signature courses, six clubhouses and other amenities, including the recently opened $1.6 million, state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center, “fantastic,” adding, “It’ an incredibly forward-thinking club and it’s fortuitous that I’m joining the team in its 25th year. I think we can take this already remarkable club to the next level in the next 25 years.”

Scully and his wife, Kristie, have three children, 20-year-old daughter Taylor, 11-year old son, Peyton, and four-year-old Jack.
