Swan Creek rises again

Westfalls give old course new life.

Kent and Ellen Westfall were looking for a new challenge 16 years ago.

They ended up moving back to a place they once called home.

The Westfalls purchased Swan Creek Golf Club in Avon, Ill., a course which originally opened in the early 1970s as a nine-hole course.

The Westfalls, who planned to open a new nine holes about a five years ago, finally saw their dream come true in May when a brand new 18 holes opened to the public.

"When we bought the course that was our vision, to build a new nine holes," Ellen Westfall said. "We felt like to keep up with the competition, we had to have 18 holes.

"Everybody likes it. Everybody is excited about it. They really think it's nice. The members actually get better scores than they did on the old nine. We wanted it to be both fair and competitive, comparable to the old nine."

"That's been our goal ever since our family bought the course in the 1990s," said Kemper Westfall, the course superintendent. "We did a lot of clearing in the last 10 years, a lot of earth moving and growing in a lot of grass."
