Just more than six years from now, the 12 best golfers from the United States and the 12 best from Europe will descend on Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., for the 41st edition of the Ryder Cup.
Between now and then, you can bet on this: The golf landscape will change in terms of talent and appearance.
Six years ago, few casual golf fans had ever heard of current 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup probables Anthony Kim, Dustin Johnson or Matt Kuchar. Rory McIlroy, Northern Ireland's answer to Tiger Woods, was all of 15 years old.
Hazeltine began preparing for the Ryder Cup years ago when it sought plans to give the golf course a near-full makeover. The first step in that process came last October, when the near-50-year-old clubhouse was demolished and construction began on a 49,000-square-foot facility. Tuesday, the course will close for nearly a year to make way for a renovation of the fairways and greens.
