It's not quite the Republican National convention, in terms of economic impact to the Greater Philadelphia Area. According to a published study, that event in 2000 created $345 million in total sales for the area, a rise of 16.6 percent in Philadelphia sales tax revenues and conventioneers spent more than 110,000 nights in regional hotels.

But the U.S. Open Championship, held at Merion GC next week, will certainly mean more to the area than just about any event since the Republicans nominated George Bush and Dick Cheney for a successful run to the White House at the turn of the century.

Judging by numbers from recent U.S. Open Championships, this year’s event will produce about $70 million in direct spending for the area. Approximately 60,000 of the 100,000 attendees at Merion will be from out of the area. And about $1.5 million in tax dollars will be generated.
