Tulsa golf courses size up damage

Many are treating or replacing Bermuda grass due to winter kill.

Superintendents of Tulsa golf courses are getting a clearer idea this week which sections of their winter-damaged Bermuda turfgrass will fill in and which need to be replaced.

Several weeks of aggressive treatments, including aerification and fertilization, along with recent rains, have helped spur new growth, but sizable areas of reluctant Bermuda will need fresh sod after one of the colder winters on record.

Turfgrass experts like Dr. Dennis Martin, professor and turfgrass extension research specialist at Oklahoma State University, are noting this may be the worst winter kill at Oklahoma courses since the spring of 1990. Not what the courses were hoping for after the number of rounds played at Tulsa public courses fell by about 50 percent from October through February.
