Call for applications to attend the fifth annual Syngenta Business Institute

Four-day Institute will be held Dec. 6-9 with applications due by Aug. 20.

For the fifth year, Syngenta is inviting golf course superintendents across the United States to apply to attend the Syngenta Business Institute, an innovative professional business development program. Syngenta developed the program specifically for golf course superintendents, in conjunction with Wake Forest University Schools of Business.

The unique, four-day program will supplement and complement superintendents’ existing knowledge base, allowing more productive and efficient golf course management. The curriculum provides hands-on knowledge for superintendents to enhance their business acumen, and provides a set of leadership skills for their professional development.

Workshop sessions focus on financial and human resource management, delegation skills, effective communications and negotiation skills, managing generational differences and more.

The Syngenta Business Institute will be Dec. 6-9, 2013, at Graylyn International Conference Center on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Superintendents must fill out an application, which includes an essay on why they believe they should be selected to attend. Applications are due by Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013. Syngenta will select 25 individuals to participate based on their essays and commitment to the industry.

Superintendents attending past Syngenta Business Institutes had this to say:

“What an outstanding education program. Everything from the initial submission to the professional education sessions were all over the top. The faculty went out of their way ensuring the material was relevant to our profession and I learned a great deal I can directly use in my day-to-day operation.” – Tony Girardi

“Through discussions about the materials presented and other issues each of us go through in our jobs I have come away with a renewed sense of self and how to lead my team more effectively.”   Bryan Barrington

“It’s a great opportunity to learn things you don’t learn in turf school; learning how to manage by individual, not group, was very interesting.” - Billy Bagwell

“This helped me identify some of my weaknesses and gave me solutions, especially when dealing with conflict in the workplace. I can’t wait to get back to my facility and put them into practice.” – John Genovesi

“The experience was one I will not soon forget. The quality of education was first class, yet there was nothing commercial about it.” – David Phipps

“I cannot think of more informative educational seminars that I have had the privilege to attend. It was top notch from the venue to the speakers to all the attendees. I have tools that I will use for years to come for me personally. In turn my club will also benefit from me attending. In today’s world of competition and the tough economic atmosphere that we are all enduring, the information and relationships that were gained will be instruments for us to use for years to come.” – John Davis

“You delivered a unique and vital educational experience. I feel privileged to have been selected to participate. Many of the concepts explored in the Leadership, Feedback, Negotiations, and Employee Management sections have caused me to reflect on my current management style. Regarding the Financial Management information, I now have a concise reference resource and a greater understanding of managing and analyzing financial statements.” – Tom Breiner

“It was definitely a first-class experience all the way around.” – Brian Nettz

“I walked into the conference room the first morning with the notion that this program would help me achieve my future career goals; it exceeded my expectations. But it also did something I sorely needed and that was to recharge my batteries. I walked into work the next week with my shoulders a bit higher.” – Bill Brown

“I have been out of turfgrass school for 16 years and never has anyone come close to providing the amount of relevant material as we received in those three days.” – Troy Flanagan

“Syngenta has stepped up to the plate and just hit a home run with the SBI. An awesome experience! SBI was an experience I know I will benefit from both personally and professionally. I returned to my property yesterday, eager to share this information with my fellow managers and my maintenance team.” - Geoff Sanders
