If someone had been away for the last two weeks and was just returning to Rhode Island to enjoy the new golf season, it would have been easy to get the impression that all was normal this week at the Pawtucket Country Club.
The club hosted the Allie Chatterton Memorial, the annual opening event for the R.I. Golf Association, on Monday and did it under bright sunshine and temperatures in the 60s.
“We hit a home run,” Bob Ward, the RIGA’s executive director, said of the ideal conditions.
Truth be told, though, the new season is beginning under anything but normal circumstances. The record-setting spring rain has created extra work for course superintendents and, at some places, caused considerable damage.
