Is newer always better?

Technology. Is it friend or foe? GCI's Digital Turfhead Jim Black examines some of the drawbacks of life's high-tech conveniences. Plus, avoid the afternoon slump.

With all the modern technology at our disposal, I can't help but feel somewhat cynical towards some of the things that are supposed to make our lives easier. Take spell-check and auto-correct for instance. As someone who spends a fair amount of time with the written word, I get pretty frustrated when my computer injects a word I wasn't planning on, or for that matter allows an incorrect word just because it's spelled right. I know, I know. I can make the effort to turn those functions off, but they're there for our convenience, write? (get it?)

Anyway - all this came to mind thanks to an eblast from the pro shop. It made me want to duck behind a tree for a moment:

"Good Morning,
If anyone has tried to reach us for the past 2 days, we are now aware of the issue and we apologize for the incontinence this has caused. Verizon is aware of this issue and indicated that it may take few more days to resolve. In the mean time you may contact the club by email or my sell phone for questions, tee times or stop by. The course is Open as well as the Club."

Have you been following the blue bird? They said no one would care, but Titter now boasts having over 350-million users. Amazing how much can be said in 140 words or less. Follow @GCImagazine and you'll be amazed by what you can learn in a tweet or two. In case you missed it, HERE are the results of TweetUp 2012 held at the Golf Industry Show in Las Vegas.

Is it quitting time yet? it seems as though the work day comes to a grinding halt after lunch... All eyes are on the clock, productivity drops by about 75%, and the crew whines about wanting to go home. I've spent many an afternoon on a triplex, dozing and mowing, dozing and mowing. Not very pretty stripes, I can tell you.

I finally realized it was time for better lunch choices to help avoid the afternoon slump. Suggestions for you and the crew can be found HERE.

Step Nine: Maintain The Golf Course!
From the American society of golf course architects comes this all-important phase of a successful golf course project. The beauty of its logic sometimes is sadly overlooked by those who seem to forget that the golf course itself is a product being offered to consumers and if you let the product deteriorate, consumers will find a better product elsewhere.  Visit the steps HERE.

GOOGLE PAGE 10
Since this is a page often overlooked (as well as the millions of search query result pages after it), I decided to see what could be found on this page for a search of "golf," "course" and "maintenance." Surprisingly there was quite a bit! I pulled THIS result for your enjoyment - a cost saving plan for the golf communities at Sun City West outside of Phoenix, Arizona. Probably something we can all use!
