PBI/Gordon introduces Katana

The manufacturer also released a Spanish label for T-Zone and registered T-Zone in California and New York.

PBI/Gordon Corp. introduced Katana Turf Herbicide at the Golf Industry Show in San Diego, Calif., last week. An agreement to market Katana in the professional turf management industry was signed by PBI/Gordon and Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha Ltd. (ISK) of Osaka, Japan in August 2009.

In university tests, Katana has excelled in removing cool-season grasses from warm-season turf, including ryegrass, clumpy ryegrass, Poa annua, Poa trivialis and annual ryegrass. In addition to kyllingas, sedges and clumpy ryegrass, Katana controls a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds, reports Doug Obermann, product manager for Gordon’s Professional Turf and Ornamental products. Katana can be used in bermudagrass, zoysiagrass and centipedegrass turf. Use sites include golf course fairways and roughs, commercial turf, athletic fields, cemeteries and sod farms. Katana has both foliar and root uptake and is effective at very low rates. Applications of Katana also have some residual control.

“Katana will be a great addition to our ProFrom product line,” says Obermann. “Like our other ProForm products, Katana is fast-acting and provides superior cool-weather performance,” he continues. Available for sale in March 2010, Katana is pending registration in certain southern states.

Additionally, a Spanish version of the label for T-Zone Broadleaf Herbicide for Tough Weeds is now available and the company has registered T-Zone in California and New York. It’s use in New York is limited to one broadcast application per year and does not include Nassau and Suffolk counties. Introduced in August 2009, it is now registered in all continental states and Hawaii.

“With the number of Spanish-speaking workers increasing each year, there is a need to assure that label directions are understood so our products will be used appropriately,” says Laylah VanBibber, Director of Marketing for the company. PBI/Gordon, which began adding Spanish labels in 2003, will continue to add Spanish versions of their product labels and MSDS information to the web site as they become available.
