Bayer Superintendent Grant Program

GCSAA and Bayer CropScience send eight GCSAA members to association’s education conference and Golf Industry Show.

Eight members of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) received all-expenses paid trips to the recently completed 2013 GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show in San Diego, Feb. 4-8.

Funding for the program is provided through a grant provided from the Environmental Institute for Golf with support from Bayer Environmental Science, a division of Bayer CropScience LP. The purpose of the grant is to assist golf course superintendents with their professional development through participation in the annual event. Winners receive airfare, hotel accommodations for five nights, conference full-pack registration, two education seminars and $200 spending money.

For the last decade, GCSAA and Bayer have partnered to fund attendance for five superintendents. In response to the damage caused by hurricanes Isaac and Sandy in 2012, Bayer expanded the program to eight winners to benefit three additional superintendents affected by the disasters.

“Bayer has been a strong supporter of GCSAA and the Environmental Institute for Golf by contributing to the betterment of the golf course management profession,” said GCSAA President Patrick R. Finlen, CGCS. "We are grateful to Bayer for reaching out in support of our members and industry partners, especially those affected by the devastating hurricanes.”

The Bayer Superintendent Grant winners selected to attend the 2013 GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show were:

  •     Bruce Gregory, Liberty (Ind.) Country Club
  •     Bradley Lazroff, Tanglewood Golf Club, Northville, Mich.
  •     Steve Richau, Pinewood Country Club, Asheboro, N.C.
  •     Dan Rootes, Ponderosa Butte Golf Course, Colstrip, Mont.
  •     Daniel Shay, Agawam Municipal Golf Course, EnField, Conn.
  •     James (Randy) Smith, Riverlands Golf and Country Club, LaPlace, La.
  •     Rolf Strobel, Sea Oaks Golf Club, Little Egg Harbor, N.J.
  •     Harold (Skip) Wade, Cantiague Park Golf Course, Amityville, N.Y.

"We are pleased to support the professional development of these superintendents – and to continue our relationship with GCSAA and the EIFG – through the Bayer Superintendent Grant Program," said Jose Milan, head of Bayer’s turf and ornamentals business. "Bayer recognizes the importance of professional development opportunities to helping golf course superintendents stay current in their evolving roles – and this in turn promotes a stronger future for our industry."
