English golf club supports development of new courses

Louth Golf Club has chipped in to provide the first of a new series of courses in sports which will help train a future generation of winners and Olympians - and curb bad health in later life. Grants have been awarded by Sport England and added to by East Lindsey District Council for the golf course to provide new courses enabling all age groups to sample the sport.

New tuition packages make getting started in golf easier for both adults and junior beginners.

On offer is a series of eight one-hour weekly lessons, taught by Louth Golf Club professional Allan Blundell.

Club chiefs have also offered a new starter membership pack which gives access to the club's practice facilities and club bar and restaurant.

Trevor Moody, golf development manager at the club, said: "Golf is almost unique in that it is a sport played by all ages. We have had members aged from seven to 90 at our club. You are never too young or too old to enjoy it.

"With the help of the English Golf Union and East Lindsey District Council we are making golf more available to all people at a price which is affordable.

"We know people who say they want to try golf, but do not want to pay £400 to join and fork out for a set of clubs," he said.

"This way we can tailor it to their needs." Club chairman Robert Haynes said more sports clubs in the Louth area could co-operate and share resources and equipment.

English Golf Union development manager Richard Flint said the new courses could help junior players become the next Justin Rose.

He said new members could soon pick up golfing skills and etiquette.

ELDC sports development manager James Brindle said clubs in the Louth area will be encouraged to improve access to all sports.

The golf courses start for juniors on June 5 between 11am and noon for eight weeks and adults on June 6 at the same time.
