Edgewood Tahoe celebrates 40 years

The golf destination in Stateline, Nev., has hosted PGA and amateur championships since 1968.

Forty years of PGA Championships and play have made Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course & Restaurant what it is today.

Coming west in 1896, the Park Family established Edgewood along the south shore of Lake Tahoe. Today, after more than a hundred years, the Park family still owns Edgewood.

Located more than six thousand feet above sea level, Edgewood Golf Course opened in 1968 and was designed by George Fazio. The par-72 measures 7,445 yards. Tom Fazio has been the only person allowed to improve, upgrade, and tweak the original design.

“The site is one of the most beautiful in the United States,” Fazio wrote in his book Golf Course Designs. ”The elevations and contours of the Tahoe site, together with the tall conifers, the wide lake, and the snow-capped mountains, provide a tremendous environment for golf… [The Parks] are committed to continuing those same standards of quality that have made Edgewood Tahoe a popular, year-round destination. It’s a wonderful place, and no matter when I go there, I never tire of that magnificent setting.”

“The changes Tom Fazio has made over the years have established us as one of the elite golf courses in this country,” said Randy Fox, head golf professional at Edgewood. “Edgewood has always offered a superior golf experience, but I think each year it gets better. We are proud to be celebrating our 40th anniversary, and we look forward to another great forty years.”

Open from late Spring to Fall, Edgewood became the first golf course in the state of Nevada to host a USGA event with the 1980 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Soon after, Edgewood hosted the 6th Annual U.S. Senior Open in 1985, the first Senior Open to be televised, at that time on an unknown sports network called ESPN. For the last sixteen years, the course has been home to the annual American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, broadcast on NBC Sports and a favorite on the celebrity circuit, featuring players like Charles Barkeley, Don Cheadle, Stone Phillips, Lou Holtz, John Elway, Jim McMahon, Ray Romano, and Michael Jordan.
