Perry O. Dye, A.S.G.C.A., announces another Dye Design course - the new San Roque Club course in Sotogrande, Spain - is hosting the European PGA Tour and the Andalucia Open de España Valle Romano.
The Dye family courses have hosted numerous professional events, including PGA, LPGA, Nationwide tour, and other international events. Some of the more prominent courses have held such events as the Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, PGA Championship, US Women’s Open and the fifth major, the Players Championship.
Perry Dye, of Dye Designs in Denver, Colo., started his design career at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. The San Roque Club-New Course will be Perry’s first solo project to host a European PGA Tournament. Perry and his father, Pete Dye, co-designed the Laguna National Golf and Country Club in Singapore, which hosts the European PGA Tour Singapore Masters.
Perry remembers quite vividly how his father, Pete, eagerly awaited the players’ comments while hosting his first PGA tour stop at Harbour Town Golf Links. It was 1969 and Arnold Palmer won the Heritage Golf Classic there. One of the most striking comments was the comparison of the course to a Pandora’s Box. It was then that the “Dye” was cast and the building of challenging golf courses has been a Dye trademark ever since.
Perry worked with Seve Ballesteros on the design of The San Roque Club-New Course. They worked together to design a layout that was playable for the average golfer, while remaining visually testing and mentally taxing for the tour players. As a tour player himself, Seve helped Perry through his golf expertise and competition background. Perry recalls when Pete and Jack Nicklaus worked together at Harbour Town, Jack’s input always favored his best shots. Seve was no different on the San Roque project, Perry says.
