Scotts Turf-Seed used Field Day 24, held in Hubbard, Ore., as the site for showcasing new seed varieties that are disease resistant and herbicide, salt, drought and heat tolerant.
“The overwhelming focus this year was on varieties bred for certain attributes,” says Gordon Zielinski, director of Turf-Seed operations. “Turf professionals are most interested in those varieties bred for specific – often problematic – issues such as cultivars that hold up extremely well to gray leaf spot and brown patch.”
Scotts Turf-Seed, by working in tandem with Pure-Seed Testing, Inc., used Field Day 24 to feature naturally developed, enhanced varieties which help golf course superintendents and lawn care professionals solve a variety of turfgrass problems. Some of these featured varieties and blends include:
Midnight Star
• Kentucky bluegrass variety featuring dark winter color and early spring green-up
• Excellent heat tolerance and low mowing tolerance – even in hot, humid areas
• Good stripe rust, Rhizoctonia sheath spot resistance
Tar Heel II
• Tall Fescue variety featuring dark green color and dense, low-growth habit
• Excellent heat tolerance; good brown patch resistance
• 100 percent endophyte content for improved insect resistance
• Included on some state lists for Certified Sod Production
Gray Hawk Blend
• Perennial ryegrass blend of those varieties showing highest gray leaf spot resistance: Gray Star, $ilver Dollar and Citation Fore
• Excellent resistance to gray leaf spot; contains endophyte for insect resistance
Saltease Blend
• Perennial ryegrass blend of those varieties showing highest salt tolerance: Gray Star, Brighstar SLT, Citation Fore and Salinas
• Stem rust, crown rust and red thread resistant; contains endophyte
