Developers of Newport Beach and Golf, an emerging 1,800-acre resort community on Texas’ Mustang Island, have reported that the Arnold Palmer Signature Course located within the resort is scheduled to open in spring 2008. The 18-hole layout, named Newport Dunes, is part of the first phase of construction at the coastal destination, which will ultimately bring residential villages, multiple hotels, a marina, tennis and beach clubs, two golf courses and additional premium amenities to Mustang Island, located on the south end of Port Aransas.
Golf icon and course designer Arnold Palmer visited Newport Dunes in April, to gauge the course’s progress and meet with resort developers Craig Millard and Charles Castor of Texas Gulf & Harbor Ltd. “Newport Dunes is the most unique golf course design I have constructed because it is my first true ocean location, and it is designed in a Scottish style,” said Palmer, whose company has designed more than 300 courses and clubs worldwide.
Newport Dunes, surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and Corpus Christi Bay, plays to a par 72 while providing outstanding vistas and ornamental landscapes. Added Palmer, “The course is a hidden gem that is certainly going to draw some attention from local, regional and national golfers alike.”
Joining the project’s professional team, including Arnold Palmer Design Company, is Northbrook, Ill.-based KemperSports, the golf management and development company that was selected to operate Newport Dunes.
“KemperSports shares our vision to make Newport Beach and Golf a world-class Gulf Coast destination,” said Craig Millard, a partner in the development company. “We look forward to a thriving partnership with them and with the entire first-rate team that has been assembled to make this golf course and resort a reality.”
