Desert Mirage Golf Academy in Glendale, Ariz., has appointed British PGA member, Sue Shapcott, as the new director of instruction. She brings to the Academy experience that will benefit the facility, local players and community.
As a player, Shapcott held national titles in Britain, France and Belgium. As an instructor, she trained under the British PGA before top instructor Hank Haney recruited her to Dallas. During her time in Dallas, Shapcott enjoyed a nomination to Golf Magazine’s Top 100 instructors list. She was also a regular contributor to “Women and Golf” Magazine and hosted a weekly golf show on local television station WFAA.
“We are excited about Sue’s decision to join us at Desert Mirage," says Tony Rizzo, general manager at Desert Mirage. "She will be responsible for ensuring consistent and effective instruction throughout the Academy. She has the skills and experience to build an academy that can compete with any in the Valley.”
As well as providing individual instruction, Shapcott hopes to emulate many of her successful programs she ran in Dallas. These include teambuilding clinics for businesses and programs for women missing corporate golf opportunities.
“Golf is increasingly becoming an integral part of corporate America," Shapcott says. "Empirical studies show that women who golf earn 5 percent more than their non-golfing counterparts do. At Desert Mirage, we want to offer fun and affordable programs to help women take up golf and enjoy the social and business benefits.”
Shapcott will also help nurture the already thriving junior programs Desert Mirage hosts.
