Oakmont Country Club didn’t have to look far to find its replacement for John Zimmers.
David Delsandro confirmed to GCI Thursday that he has accepted the superintendent position at the famed Western Pennsylvania club. Oakmont promoted Delsandro a month after Zimmers decided to accept the superintendent job at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Delsandro has deep Oakmont ties, having served as the club’s director of U.S. operations and projects since 2013. Delsandro spent three years as the grounds superintendent at Nassau (N.Y.) Country Club before returning to Oakmont, where he started his post-college career as one of Zimmers’ assistants after graduating from Penn State in 2006. Delsandro, a Western Pennsylvania native who interned at Oakmont in 2004 and ’05, played a key role in preparing the course for the 2007 and 2016 U.S. Opens and 2010 U.S. Women’s Open. The USGA announced last summer Oakmont will host its record 10th U.S. Open in 2025.
The promotion continues a stretch of high-profile clubs filling their top agronomic positions. Merion Golf Club hired Muirfield Village Golf Club’s Paul B. Latshaw to replace retiring Matt Shaffer in February. Chad Mark announced he was leaving Inverness to replace Latshaw at Muirfield Village. Zimmers then decided to leave Oakmont to replace Mark at Inverness. Zimmers had been Oakmont’s superintendent since 1999.
