After a one-year delay, construction has begun on a third nine holes at The Players Club at Deer Creek in northwest Omaha.
Club manager Chris Jacobson said Friday that the first hole on the property north and west of the current 18 holes is completed. The new golf holes are residential-driven, he said, sparked by a development called Deer Creek Highlands.
"They are trying to complete four or five holes prior to July's Street of Dreams," he said. "The remaining three or four holes will be done in the fall."
The third nine is scheduled to open for play in spring 2006.
The original 18 holes was designed by Arnold Palmer's golf course team. Jacobson said the third nine wasn't directly designed by Palmer's group, but will adhere to those principles.
A driving range also is under construction, with a goal to open this July.
Extreme makeover
Bay Hills Golf Course north of Plattsmouth has spent more than $ 800,000 renovating its clubhouse and driving range, and has started a three-year project to retool 14 of its 18 holes.
"We have gotten after it down here," said Dan Livingston of Fairway Marketing, who is serving as general manager during the makeover.
Among the changes:
A remodeled clubhouse with a full inventory of merchandise and equipment; a new banquet room; a full-service kitchen offering lunch and dinner by mid-May; new golf carts; and fully paved cart paths.
The initial holes undergoing reconstruction are Nos. 10 and 11, but both remain open to play.
Livingston said Bay Hills, while open to the public, has sold $ 500,000 in "founding memberships."
"Flex memberships" also are available. For $ 199 a year, flex members can play all they want with a cart by making tee times for Monday through Thursday before 1 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday after 3 p.m.
Said Livingston: "Those have been real popular with shift workers, policemen, firemen and groups that work night hours."
