Death and taxes

Superintendents have some tax hurdles to face.

One of the things I really didn’t understand when I started my own business was how much time I’d spend organizing and worrying about taxes. Self-employment has many virtues, but tax day isn’t one of them.

I just wrote a handful of checks that will leave the Jones family eating macaroni and cheese for about six months. Benjamin Franklin famously wrote the only things that are certain in life are death and taxes … so just shoot me now.

But, my day of pain reminded me that superintendents face some tax challenges as well. For example:

  • How do you handle taxable benefits like vehicle allowances?
  • How many courses still provide housing for superintendents or other employees and what tax impact does that have?

For those of you who do outside consulting, how complex does it get trying to separate regular income from self-employment revenue?

What other weird things do you deal with?

I’m genuinely curious about the problems you face because of your job. Just click through to the GCI forum to share your tax challenges or even stories about the worst day of the year.

With that, I’ll leave you with my favorite tax-related quote from Dave Barry:

“It’s income tax time again, Americans: time to gather up those receipts, get out those tax forms, sharpen up that pencil and stab yourself in the aorta.”
