Lawrence, Kan. – Lawrence Country Club has announced membership approval of $3.1 million in golf course and maintenance facility improvements. The club, located near the University of Kansas campus, was established in 1914 and maintains a rich tradition. Todd Clark of CE Golf Design is the golf course architect on the project and he will be working closely with golf course contractor Mid-America Golf and Landscape when construction is set to begin this summer.

The Lawrence Country Club is set to undergo major changes over the next two years.

The 91-year-old club has undergone several changes recently to its clubhouse and pool amenities, and is committed to adapting its facility to meet the changing demands of today’s golfers. Renovations will include completely rebuilt greens with more pinnable area. Tees and sand bunkers also will be redone. An updated irrigation system will utilize water captured in a new 3.5-acre lake that will also serve to improve storm water management. The practice range will be renovated and a new short game practice facility will be added.

Through reconfiguration of the practice facility and several golf holes, the golf course will drop from a par 72 to a par 70 with minimal loss of overall yardage, essentially making the golf course more challenging. Emphasizing a multiple tee system will ensure that the course plays fairly for golfers of all abilities.

“Every aspect of the golf course will be enhanced with this renovation project,” says Clark. “This renovation will reward the long-time members, while attracting new members through the improved condition and strategy of the golf course. These improvements are necessary to secure the character and charm of Lawrence Country Club for next 100 years.”

Bradley C. Minnick, CGCS, agrees.

“With the age and original construction techniques of the current greens, it was becoming more and more difficult to maintain the high standards demanded by our members while keeping fair hole locations,” he says. “We are convinced it is time to take advantage of the advancements made recently in the golf course industry, especially the improved strains of bentgrass. However, the greatest benefit to my staff will be the new infrastructure that will allow for future improvements.”
