Golfers from southeast Fresno County and northern Tulare County could have a new place to play in summer 2007.

An 18-hole championship course is planned on a 200-acre plot about a mile west of Dinuba, formerly the Peters family farm.

The course, owned by the city of Dinuba, would fill a need for a full-sized 18-hole public course on the Valley's east side between Visalia and Sherwood Forest near Sanger. Selma has a par-69 course.

PGA touring pro Mike Springer, who grew up in Dinuba, said the course will be a "five-star muni." Springer is a consultant on the project, which is being designed by John Fought.

Deputy city manager Dan Meinert said the golf course will be part of a water-reclamation project, using reclaimed wastewater to irrigate the course.

"A big advantage we have is we've got a lot of land and a lot of water -- 2 million gallons of wastewater a day," he said.

Meinert said Dinuba has applied for a grant to help finance the course. He projected the course would open in summer 2007 unless it receives the grant, which would push the opening back six to nine months because of the additional steps that would be involved.
