The days are numbered for a popular nine-hole municipal golf course as plans proceed to build a new control tower at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

Brookside Golf Course, in the shadow of the airport, has at least another year before design plans and the exact location of the new 205-foot airport tower are determined, airport spokesman Brian Kulpin said.

But once finalized by the Federal Aviation Administration, the airport authority will terminate its lease agreement with the city of Reno to operate the golf course.

Kulpin said the FAA decided to build a new $24 million tower more than a year ago. He said the current tower provides adequate safety for the flights in and out of the airport, but the new tower will give the airport the ability to meet its future needs.

"We're a growing airfield and certainly in need of a tower that matches that growth," Kulpin said.

Brookside is a popular course with area seniors. Along with the moderately short length of the course, it's easy to get on for a round and even easier on the pocketbook.

Seniors can buy a monthly pass for $55 to play unlimited golf.
