Construction under way at Maine National Country Club

The 360-acre golf and residential community will feature the first new private golf course in the Wells/Kennebunkport area in more than 100 years.

Construction is under way at the Maine National golf community in Wells, Maine, a 360-acre golf and residential community which will feature the first new private golf course in the Wells/Kennebunkport area in more than 100 years.

Centrally located in the rolling terrain of Wells, Maine – just minutes from the coastal communities of Kennebunkport and Ogunquit – this private Club intends to set a new standard for private golf and living well. The Club will feature an 18-hole, 7,200-yard Faxon/Booth-designed Championship golf course and a luxury residential community of 27 single-family home sites and 54 luxury town homes.

"We, along with our partners, love this area. We're excited to bring a club of this caliber to Wells, and we eagerly anticipate its opening. We are grateful to the James family, whose ancestors purchased this land more than 100 years ago. We believe the Club will play an important role in this community now and in the years to come," said Bill LaMarche, c.o.o./partner, and Stan Abrams, partner, of Maine National Country Club.

PGA Tour veteran Brad Faxon and award-winning golf architect and partner Brad Booth have commented on the Maine National project, "Our involvement has been from the inception of this project and we have long held that this ground provides the best golf potential of any site of which we have been involved.  We feel we have created a design that will complement the outstanding terrain and character found here and we simply can't wait to see it come alive. The enthusiasm we feel is such that we have committed to extraordinary involvement in the construction process via full construction management so that we can be on site extensively. This is a very special place and we wish to see that this golf course is properly crafted. We believe the golf experience here could be something exceptionally distinctive."

Maine National Country Club will be managed by Southworth Golf Management of Newton, Massachusetts.

"Southworth Golf Management has a history of delivering a casual, yet luxurious golf and club experience, one that our members and residents will truly appreciate. Their quality and expertise in this arena, as well their proven track record of managing, full service, high-end family-oriented clubs is second to none and made them our obvious choice. We are also pleased that this relationship will afford our members reciprocity at other Southworth-managed clubs including clubs located in Scotland , the Caribbean and in the U.S.," said Melodee James, a partner in Maine National.

"I believe that this will be an extraordinary golf community built with a very talented New England group. From designers Brad Faxon and Brad Booth, to general contractor Agri-Scape , Maine National will benefit greatly from this collection of seasoned professionals.   We are very excited to team up with these companies and look forward to a long and genuine relationship with the town of Wells and its surrounding communities," said David Southworth , founder of Southworth Golf Management.

The golf course is scheduled to open its first nine holes next summer and the final nine by early summer 2009.
