The City of Cleburne, Texas, began construction of the Cleburne Golf Links. The new course is located at the site of the old Cleburne Municipal Golf Course with additional land on the east side and north end of the property. The site, which borders the east side of Lake Pat Cleburne, will provide a scenic and challenging golf course for all ages and genders.
Cleburne Golf Links will be a par-72 facillity with a driving range. There will be four sets of tees with the course ranging in yardage from approximately 7,160 yards from the championship tees down to about 5,370 yards from the forward tees. In addittion, there will be a fifth set of tees provided for juniors and beginners that will measure about 2,870 yards.
Cleburne Golf Links is scheduled to open in the fall of 2007, sometime between Oct. 1 and Nov. 15. Construction is currently on schedule. Golf course architect John Colligan designed the links style layout and is overseeing the project along with Max Robertson, parks director; Craig Nieman, golf course manager/head professional; and Mike Wren, golf course superintendent. General contractor for this project is Landscapes Unlimited.
Robert Fleetwood is the project manager and Preet Singh is the project superintendent of Landscapes Unlimited. The company has built golf courses internationally and for designers including Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf and Tom Fazio.
"I feel very fortunate that we (City of Cleburne) were able to obtain the services of such a fine team between designer and contractor with the funds that were available," Nieman says. "With the past records of John Colligan and Landscapes Unlimited I know that we will have an end product that will surpass most people's imagination of what could be accomplished in just one year's time."
The layout of the course will include four par fives, four par threes and ten par
four holes. The course will be in a true links style, basically playing nine holes out headed in a northerly direction and nine holes back headed in a southerly direction. Views of the lake will be provided on virtually every hole with water coming in to play frequently. Several of the holes are actually on the shoreline of Lake Pat Cleburne.
