Columbus, Ohio, course wet, but in good condition

The Country Club of Columbus has not been immune to the tremendous rains that have fallen on Columbus in recent days.

The course has received more than 4 inches since Sunday afternoon. But golf pro Brian Stubbs said the course will be ready.

"The course has handled (the rain) remarkably well," Stubbs said. "We had some new sod in the ninth fairway which has washed away a couple of times, which we hope to repair. And the bunkers, of course, washed down.

"But William Smith, our golf course superintendent, and his staff have done a tremendous job."

Stubbs says he expects the course to be in good, if wet, shape when the 67th annual Southeastern Amateur tees off at 8 this morning.

"The course drains very well, especially after the renovations," Stubbs said. "Depending on if we get anymore on Wednesday afternoon, there should be no standing water."

The defending champion Carter Mize returns. Mize, who also won the tournament in 1991, edged David Noll by two shots last year.

Noll, who is also in this year's field, went on to win last year state amateur title.

Four-time Southeastern Amateur winner Wright Waddell is competing as well.
