Clans duel with tribes at Circling Raven

Golf competition pits Scottish Highlanders versus American Indians.

Worley, Idaho – Scotland’s Royal Dornoch’s 12-man team, with two “plus” handicappers, two professionals and an average age of 34 will offer a considerable challenge as Highlanders meet Indian Country in the Circling Raven/Royal Dornoch challenge matches in September.

The Scots, all members of Royal Dornoch Golf Club, bring an average handicap of seven and represent seven Highland Clans. The Circling Raven team, to be made up primarily of Coeur d’Alene tribal members, will be named soon.

This event launches the first ever golf competition between Highlanders and American Indians, but it also connects Royal Dornoch, established in 1616, with Circling Raven Golf Club, one of the newer courses in the world. Circling Raven opened in August 2003 and has been honored with “Top 10 Best New” courses status by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. Circling Raven is owned and operated by the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

“The intention on picking the team was to focus on local lads whose family history was associated with Dornoch and the Highlands,” says RDGC head professional and competitor Andrew Skinner. “It just so happens that we have a number of good quality golfers in the group, with two former club champions and the current club champion.”

The competition is itself significant, but the event will also provide a unique cultural exchange between Scotland, Indian Country and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

“I can promise you that the members of our team were chosen not just for their golf, but for their personalities and character,” says Alex Campbell, a marketing specialist at RDGC and the team’s secretary. “They will be outstanding representatives of Scotland and the Highlands.”

Members of the Dornoch team plan to dress in formal kilts for opening ceremonies on Sept. 19. Spokane’s Scottish St. Andrew’s Society has accepted an invitation to provide a full pipe and drum band. The Coeur d’Alene Tribe will present a traditional drum group, along the horses and riders in full traditional regalia.

The first of three days of competition will follow opening ceremonies on the 19th. Competition will continue on Sept. 20 and 22 after a day off on Sept.  21.

“We want to present Circling Raven to the international golf world, along with the Idaho Golf Trail and this spectacular region,” says Dave Christenson, Circling Raven director of golf. “The cultural aspects are tremendous for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and for the Scots.”
